Dear friends, colleagues and VOX supporters,
VOX is at a crucial turning point. In September, 2011, the centre and its partners, Artexte and RCAAQ, will be moving to the 2-22 building on Sainte-Catherine Street, corner of Saint-Laurent Boulevard. The presence of the three organizations in the Quartier des spectacles is of great importance because they will offer a free annual programme of contemporary art (exhibitions, film screenings, research, conferences, bookstore, educational activities, etc.) which will be complementary to the activities and shows already available.
The move is an exciting opportunity for VOX. It will occupy the building’s 4th floor that will be divided into an exhibition space of almost 4500 square feet, as well as offices, a workshop, and storage space. The move also represents an opportunity for the centre to improve conditions for promoting artists and curators, as well as organizations with whom it is looking to realize projects. The exhibition space will include a main room alongside the viewing room, making it possible to host individual as well as large-scale exhibitions, and a multi-purpose “lab” devoted essentially to emerging art practices and special events.
In order for this project to become a reality, VOX will receive funding to the amount of $831 065 from the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund and $2 101 275 from the Ministère des Communications, de la Culture et de la Condition Féminine, while the City of Montreal has ceded its share of the land. It should be mentioned that this project was initiated in 1995 and that it is coming to fruition as a result of numerous studies and an enormous amount of work since 2004.
However significant the financial support allocated for the immobilization project may be, it does not cover the cost of the activities that VOX is planning.
