Irene F. Whittome. Room 901

Opening January 24 at 5 PM.

In the summer of 1980, Irene F. Whittome was finalizing a major cycle of works. In her emptied studio, she began undertaking what would become Room 901. All the materials in the studio were stacked in a corner; the brick walls and columns were repainted white: the space was prepared the same way a painter readies a canvas to take pigment. The studio, on Rue Saint-Alexandre, became the medium for a site-specific intervention that would entail transformations over almost two years, from October 1980 to July 1982. To find out more »

Jacqueline Hoang Nguyen. Space Fiction & the Archives

St. Paul was proclaimed “Centennial Star of Canada,” and its shining achievement was the construction of the world’s first “UFO Landing Pad” in time for Canada’s 100th birthday. Art Histories
Curator: Marie-Josée Jean

Join the artists and curator for a guided tour of the exhibition on Saturday March 17 at 2 p.m.

While the universal history of art has been revealed to be a fiction that multiple art historians and theoreticians have sought to deconstruct and reconstruct, many artists, for their part, have made efforts to expose its successive determinisms and imagine alternative histories. This attitude, described as meta-narrative, retro-avant-garde or simply critiquing, aims to restore notions of fiction and politics to the ideal museum that is art history. To find out more »
