While the universal history of art has been revealed to be a fiction that multiple art historians and theoreticians have sought to deconstruct and reconstruct, many artists, for their part, have made efforts to expose its successive determinisms and imagine alternative histories. VOX is delighted to welcome Nicolai Punin in Montreal. In the context of our inaugural exhibition “Art Histories”, he has kindly accepted our invitation to give a conference on Kazimir Malevich. Mr. Punin, who lives and works in St. Petersburg, was a friend and contemporary of Malevich. This slide-lecture aims to follow important historical moments of the reception of his work in Western Europe and the USA, from its earliest encounters with Futurism until the present-day appreciations of Suprematism. Inauguration celebration and vernissage of the exhibition “Art Histories

Now occupying the entire fourth floor of the 2-22, with 800 m2 of floor space—more than half of which will be dedicated to exhibitions—VOX will offer programming resolutely oriented toward research and experimentation by artists and curators alike, and the long-term dissemination of their work both nationally and internationally.

March 16 will also see the opening of the RCAAQ’s Formats bookstore and the Artexte reading room, as well as the vernissages for the exhibitions “Art Histories” and Constellation & Correspondences: Networking Between Artists 1970–1980, presented at VOX and Artexte respectively.

In November, 2011, VOX will move to the 2-22 building in downtown Montreal – a building dedicated to culture at the entrance of the Quartier des spectacles – with its IMAGO partners Artexte and the RCAAQ (Regroupement des centres d’artistes autogérés du Québec), as well as CIBL and the Vitrine Culturelle. VOX is at a crucial turning point. In September, 2011, the centre and its partners, Artexte and RCAAQ, will be moving to the 2-22 building on Sainte-Catherine Street, corner of Saint-Laurent Boulevard. The presence of the three organizations in the Quartier des spectacles is of great importance because they will offer a free annual programme of contemporary art (exhibitions, film screenings, research, conferences, bookstore, educational activities, etc.) which will be complementary to the activities and shows already available. IMAGO: an ambitious visual arts project becomes a reality

Montreal, May 18, 2010 – It’s now official: during a radio broadcast organized by CIBL and the Société de développement Angus (SDA), Ms. Christine St-Pierre, Minister of Culture, Communications et Condition féminine, and Mr. Raymond Bachand, Finance Minister and Minister responsible for the region of Montreal, announced, in the presence of Mr. Gérald Tremblay, Mayor of Montreal, an investment of $4.1 million enabling Artexte, the Regroupement des centres d’artistes autogérés du Québec (RCAAQ) and VOX, Contemporary Image Centre, to carry out the IMAGO project in the building 2-22 Sainte-Catherine Street East, on the corner of Saint-Laurent Boulevard. This investment completes already existing funding of $1.6 million which the three organizations have received from the Federal Government’s Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.

During the Nuit blanche à Montréal, VOX will be presenting in its front window Take a Look from the Inside, a video by Chantal Maes. As Maes stutters through a reading of Christian Dotremont's text, the artist sensitizes us to the shifts between individual or inward focuses and their public expression.

The 2010 Graphika Awards ceremony took place on February 4 at the Montreal Metropolis, where over 800 industry professionals gathered for the event.
