Five
photographers from diverse eras are linked by
a shared concern for the human condition. Each
in her own way infuses the documentary tradition
with an emphasis on personal implication with
the subject and a subjective approach to the events
being documented, be they private or public. The
accompanying essay explores the effects the private
sphere has had on the development of the genre.
