Thomas Kneubühler

Born in Switzerland in 1963; lives and works in Montreal.

In Thomas Kneubühler’s most recent series of photographs, After Dark (2006) and Office 2003 (2003), one senses the artist’s marked interest in the concept of “artificial spaces” —that is, places made by people. Working at night and employing a variety of perspectives, he stops to observe deserted buildings and traffic zones. These generic locations emerge as non-places, or residual zones—consequences of societal experimentation built around newfound mobility. The artist questions lifestyles of the 20th and 21st centuries and the creation of desocialized, uninhabited spaces that fracture the city. These pictures evoke places that are at once attractive and terrifying, providing a vision of the city not often experienced.

Thomas Kneubühler’s works have been the subject of several solo and group shows in Switzerland and Germany. Recently, he has had shows at AXENÉO7, Gatineau, and Galerie ProjexMtl, Montreal (2006), Platform: Centre for Photographic and Digital Arts, Winnipeg, and VU, centre de diffusion et de production de la photographie, Quebec City (2005), as well as at Centre des arts actuels Skol, Montreal (2004). His works can also be found in many Swiss collections. Kneubühler was awarded a master’s degree in visual arts from Concordia University in 2003. After Dark is part of the Private Property project, a book published by the Éditions Dazibao in 2006.
